Topics addressed may include the emergence of realism as a moral and aesthetic category; the connection between literature and scientific observation; the possibility of authentic representation, and; the use of documentary technique to address challenging social and psychological issues. Primary readings may be drawn from the works of Charlotte Brontë, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, George Gissing, Anthony Trollope, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, and others.
