Various aspects of the culture of the Middle Ages from the creation of the Carolingian empire (ca. 800-1300CE) in relation to the historical background; special emphasis on the interaction of the church, state, and medieval social classes in the creation of a distinctive medieval civilization. The course is interdisciplinary in approach and includes readings in literature and slide lectures. For History majors and minors, this is designated as a pre-1700 history course.
